According to the executive vice president of a Tennessee facility, pain management is ripe for significant growth in ASCs. “As newer pain procedures become more recognized in the marketplace as viable treatments and receive payer approval, ASC volume will increase.” Read this ASC Focus article for more insight into clinical innovations and business trends in ASC pain management.
On February 4, ASCA representatives met with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) staff responsible for the payment policies in ASCs. ASCA representatives thanked CMS staff for making this change, but spent most of the time discussing other payment policy changes that need to occur to stop the divergence in payments between ASCs and HOPDs.
CMS staff also solicited feedback from ASCA on any codes that should be added to the ASC-payable list for 2020. In response, ASCA is conducting a brief survey of our members. Read more.

Senators from both parties sent letters this month to a number of insurance providers asking for more information on billing and payment procedures to stop "costly surprise bills" — exorbitant fees charged after a procedure due to discrepancies in insurance coverage and other issues.
The Joint Commission Debuts Speak Up to Prevent Infection Joint Commission Press Release (02/05/19) The Joint Commission today debuted its new Speak Up To Prevent Infection campaign—featuring free, downloadable educational materials in English and Spanish for the public and for health care providers to support patient involvement in their care. The campaign's ready-made, easy-to-read resources include: an infographic poster/flyer in three sizes, all available in English and Spanish, for patients and their families; an animated video, available in English and Spanish, to incorporate in hospital programming; and a distribution guide with recommendations on how health care organizations can use and provide the materials for patients and their families, caregivers and advocates.
State Finds Compromise on Surgery Centers VT Digger (02/10/19) Faher, Mike After a legislative battle ended in a stalemate last year, state officials appear to have found a compromise for regulating a relatively new type of surgical center. A Senate bill, S.73, and a new report from a study group propose that Vermont should license and regulate independent ambulatory surgical centers for the first time.

Sedentary Lifestyle Could Increase Risk of Colorectal Cancer in Young Women NBC News (02/05/19) Charles, Shamard For the first time, a scientific study has identified sedentary behavior as a potential risk factor to explain the sharp rise in colorectal cancer among those under 50. The study, which looked at TV viewing as well as other sedentary behavior in nearly 90,000 American women, found that more than one hour of daily TV viewing was associated with a 12 percent increase in risk of colorectal cancer.
