On July 7, a US House Appropriations subcommittee advanced a bill that would provide funding for the Departments of Labor, Education and Health and Human Services for fiscal year 2021. This action is the first step in the lengthy appropriations process that Congress undertakes every year to fund programs and activities carried out by the federal government.

As an ever-increasing number of complex surgeries are regularly being performed in an outpatient setting at ambulatory surgical centers, some brain tumor resections may be safe and feasible for appropriately selected patients, new research suggests. Unadjusted results from a large feasibility study that included more than 300 patients who underwent craniotomy for resection of meningioma showed that among those who were treated in an outpatient setting, mortality and complication rates were significantly lower than for their inpatient counterparts.

Gov. Greg Abbott extended his ban on elective medical procedures to over a 100 more counties Thursday as the state sees an all-time high in the number of patients hospitalized with the novel coronavirus. To ensure hospitals have sufficient capacity to treat a surge in COVID-19 patients, Abbott issued a proclamation requiring hospitals throughout West, Central and South Texas to postpone surgeries and procedures that aren’t medically necessary to correct a serious medical condition or to preserve the life of a patient.

Many of the healthcare delivery sites that connect the medtech industry to patients benefited from the support of the Paycheck Protection Program, according to data released by the U.S. Treasury this week. On the diagnostics front, about 5.6 percent of the nearly 15,500 medical laboratories in the U.S. received loans exceeding $150,000, as did roughly 16.1 percent of the more than 3,100 businesses classified as diagnostic imaging centers.
