Since ASCA’s last update in August, healthcare organizations across the country posted 333 breaches of protected health information (PHI) affecting 500 or more individuals. United Surgical Partners International (USPI), the largest ambulatory surgery platform in the country and a subsidiary of Tenet Healthcare, and Providence, a not-for-profit health system serving the Western U.S., announced today that they have signed a new development agreement that will increase access to ambulatory surgical services across many communities. USPI and Providence entered a joint venture partnership in 2004 in California, which has grown to five ambulatory surgery centers.

Implementing the evidence-based RSI reduction bundle across 114 health care facilities resulted in a 14.3 percent reduction in the rate of harm caused by RSIs and a 59.1 percent increase in RSI near-miss reporting. The compliance to the RSI bundle reached an average of 70.5 percent, and 63.2 percent of the facilities are actively performing Plan-Do-Check-Act cycles to improve bundle compliance continually.

As part of President Biden's historic Inflation Reduction Act, the nation's new prescription drug law, for the first time ever, drug companies will pay rebates to Medicare when their prescription drug prices increase faster than the rate of inflation for certain drugs dispensed to people with Medicare. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced next steps outlining how the Department will implement the new Medicare Prescription Drug Inflation Rebate Program, which will lower drug costs for millions of Americans.

Health insurance providers in New Jersey will soon be required to cover colonoscopies five years earlier, beginning at age 45, following an increase in colorectal cancer among younger adults. Gov. Phil Murphy signed a new law last week mandating the change, which coincides with updated guidance from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which recommended earlier screening.

Orthopaedic surgeons at Allegheny Health Network’s (AHN) Monroeville Surgery Center have become the first in the Pittsburgh region to perform outpatient hip replacement in the convenience and comfort of a stand-alone community ambulatory surgery facility, greatly improving the overall surgical experience for patients. AHN joint reconstruction specialist Michael Levine, MD, started performing same-day partial and total hip replacement procedures at the AHN Monroeville Surgery Center in October.
