Thanks to advancements in medical techniques and devices, surgeons are performing an increasing number of total joint surgeries in the outpatient setting. According to a preprint article in The Journal of Arthroplasty, the proportion of elective total joint arthroplasty (TJA) patients who experienced same-day discharge in 2021 was more than 30 percent, up from less than 1 percent of patients undergoing TJA in 2017. On February 22, ASCA representatives met virtually with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) staff responsible for payment policies in ASCs.
One topic of conversation was the ASC Covered Procedures List (ASC-CPL). ASCA representatives raised concerns with CMS using a “typical Medicare beneficiary” standard to determine what procedures should be added to the ASC-CPL, questioning who this description represents and arguing that clinicians should be given more discretion to determine the appropriate site of service.

Millions of people across the United States missed routine cancer screenings during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the prevalence of screening for breast, cervical and prostate cancers in the previous year falling anywhere from 6 percent to 15 percent between 2019 and 2021, according to a new study from the American Cancer Society. "We were thinking there would be a rebound in late 2020," said Dr. William Dahut, chief scientific officer of the American Cancer Society.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services has issued a proposed rule designed to address the administrative hassles of prior authorization by requiring certain payers to implement an automated process, meet shorter time frames for decision making, and improve transparency. The proposal applies to payer processes mainly in public programs, with more limited application to health insurance marketplaces and no requirements on employer-sponsored coverage.

A report released on Friday found that HIPAA complaints and breaches spiked between 2017 and 2021, with the agency in charge of handling the notices saying it lacks sufficient resources to properly respond. The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act requires the Department of Health and Human Services to submit an annual report to Congress regarding HIPAA complaints, including how many the agency has received and resolved as well as how many complaints were settled monetarily.
