On February 9, the Outpatient Surgery Quality and Access Act of 2023 (H.R. 972/S. 312) was introduced in the US House of Representatives and the US Senate. Since its introduction, Representatives Neal Dunn, MD (R-FL), Michael Burgess, MD (R-TX) and Vern Buchanan (R-FL) have voiced their support for the ASC community and joined the bill as cosponsors.

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it has taken action to restrict the unlawful entry of xylazine active pharmaceutical ingredients and finished dosage form drug products into the country to address a growing public health concern. The chemical xylazine has increasingly been found in illicit drugs such as illicitly manufactured fentanyl and other drugs and increasingly detected in overdose deaths.

A year after the Biden administration implemented Congress' law to ban surprise medical bills, the policy particulars are still caught up in litigation, and lawsuits are preventing insurers and hospitals from settling out-of-network disputes. A 2021 law banned out-of-network surprise medical bills as of the beginning of last year.

A prominent group of nurses in California slammed a state plan to rollback masking and COVID-19 vaccine requirements in health care settings starting in April, arguing that the decision puts health care workers at risk. The condemnation came Friday after the California Department of Public Health announced earlier in the day that it will no longer require masks to be worn in indoor high-risk and health care settings nor require health care workers to be vaccinated for COVID-19 starting April 3.
