Two recent studies, along with ongoing work by MedPAC, show considerable savings potential for policies that align reimbursement for certain outpatient services at the level of the lowest cost setting, such as in ASCs. According to a recent analysis by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA), adopting site-neutral payment policies could save $471 billion over the next 10 years, including $152 billion in savings from patient out-of-pocket spending reduction. After considering proposals on the topic for years, the Iowa legislature is ready to send a bill to Governor Kim Reynolds (R) that will require ASCs to be licensed by the state. Currently one of six states—California, Idaho, Iowa, North Dakota, Vermont and Wisconsin—that do not require licensure for ASCs, Iowa Senate File 75 would require licensure of ASCs in the state.

An increase in shortages of inexpensive yet critical medications is forcing hospitals to make "horrible" choices and is amounting to a national security threat, according to a report and testimony at a Senate homeland security hearing on Wednesday. A report prepared for the hearing found that drug shortages increased by nearly 30 percent last year compared with 2021, with an average shortage lasting 18 months and some spanning 15 years.

Doximity, Inc., the leading digital platform for U.S. medical professionals, today released its annual Physician Compensation Report, revealing a slight decline of 2.4 percent in average pay for doctors in 2022. The report includes self-reported compensation data from over 190,000 U.S. doctors over six years and over 31,000 full-time physicians in the last year alone.

These findings provide evidence that minimally invasive TLIF can be performed safely and efficiently in the ASC in Medicare-age patients. With same-day discharge, fusion procedures performed in the ASC offer a similar safety and more attractive cost–benefit profile for older patients than the same surgery undertaken in the traditional hospital setting.

A recent study by the New Jersey Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (NJAASC) revealed that 84 percent of New Jersey's ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) have difficulty recruiting staff in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. NJAASC surveyed 108 ASCs representing 18 of the state’s 21 counties in during Q4 2022.

A rare strain of bacteria found in recalled eye drops has been linked to dozens of infections, as well as cases of vision loss and surgical removal of eyes. This week, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported two additional deaths – a total of three – have been linked to the bacterial infection.
