On March 27, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) returned HB 2222 to the Virginia General Assembly with a recommendation of substitute. The bill, which had originally included provisions regarding certification of both surgical technologists and surgical assistants, had been sent to the governor stripped of its surgical technologist provisions.

A federal judge in Texas said Thursday that some Affordable Care Act mandates cannot be enforced nationwide, including those that require insurers to cover a wide array of preventive care services at no cost to the patient, including some cancer, heart and STD screenings, and tobacco programs. In the new ruling, US District Judge Reed O’Connor struck down the recommendations that have been issued by the US Preventive Services Task Force, which is tasked with determining some of the preventive care treatments that Obamacare requires to be covered.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will be accepting data submissions for the Surveys on Patient Safety Culture™ (SOPS®) Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) Database. Data submission will be open June 1-22, 2023. ASCs may submit their most recent survey data administered between July 2021 and June 2023. AHRQ developed the ASC SOPS in response to interest from ASCs in assessing patient safety culture in their facilities.

ECRI, an independent group tracking the safety, quality and cost-effectiveness of healthcare, releases an analysis each year naming the 10 biggest patient safety issues the industry should be monitoring.

In this cohort study of 9,831 adults older than 65 years in New Hampshire, 8 percent had advanced polyps or colorectal cancer during surveillance colonoscopy. The majority of patients were recommended to return for future colonoscopy even if life expectancy was limited.
