ASCA sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission last week urging the agency not to adopt its proposed non-compete rule. The rule’s inability to apply to nonprofit employers, ASCA said, would unintentionally obstruct competition in healthcare and exacerbate a power imbalance in the healthcare marketplace.

On April 13, ASCA staff met with senior leadership at CMS to discuss concerns with the ASC Quality Reporting (ASCQR) Program. ASCA invited the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) and the Outpatient Ophthalmic Surgery Society (OOSS) to participate on the call along with ASC Quality Collaboration (ASCQC) staff. Participants primarily discussed ASC-11: Cataracts: Improvement in Patient’s Visual Function within 90 Days Following Cataract Surgery. On April 13, Ridgewood Orthopaedic Surgery Center of San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas, hosted a facility tour for their member of Congress, Representative Chip Roy (R-TX). During the tour, facility staff educated the congressman and his staff about the ASC community and the importance of supporting the Outpatient Surgery Quality and Access Act of 2023.

The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) of Skokie, Illinois, released updated standards for its three-year Advanced Orthopaedic Certification program, according to a release. The Certification Handbook for Advanced Orthopaedics, v42, provides a roadmap for the program, launched in 2018 and created by an expert panel of professionals in orthopedic and complex spine procedures.

Physicians bill commercial healthcare insurance companies an average of $3.8 million a year, according to a new report from AMN Healthcare, a leading provider of healthcare staffing and revenue cycle solutions. The company's 2023 Physician Billing Report tracks claims submitted by physicians in 18 specialties, as well as claims submitted by nurse practitioners and certified registered nurse anesthetists.

A protracted period of upward volatility in medical liability premiums has extended into a fourth consecutive year and suggests a hard insurance market has spread across many states making it difficult for physicians to find affordable coverage, according to an analysis issued today by the American Medical Association. The prevalence of year-to-year increases in medical liability premiums between 2019 and 2022 has not been observed in two decades.

On April 17, 2023, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) 405(d) Program announced the release of the following resources to help address cybersecurity concerns in the Healthcare and Public Health Sector: Knowledge on Demand, Health Industry Cybersecurity Practices 2023 Edition, and Hospital Cyber Resiliency Initiative Landscape Analysis. These efforts are a key part of the Administration’s work to secure all of our Nation’s critical infrastructure from cyber threats.

The aim of this study was to determine the relationships among patient safety climate, standard precaution adherence, and health care worker exposures and HAIs. In this novel study we identified that a positive patient safety climate and adherence to standard precautions predict key HAI and occupational health outcomes.
