ASCA awarded its Nap Gary Legacy Award for Lifetime Achievement in the ASC Community to Kathy Bryant, former chief executive officer of ASCA. David Shapiro, MD, former president and current member of the ASCA Board of Directors and anesthesiologist of Red Hills Surgical Center, presented the award to Bryant at the ASCA 2023 Conference & Expo in Louisville, Kentucky, on May 19.

Make plans to participate in ASCA’s 2023 Salary & Benefits Survey, which will be open the entire month of June. This survey collects national, regional and state data on 20+ ASC positions and is a vital tool that assists ASCs in attracting and retaining the best employees.

There is mounting concern among some U.S. lawmakers about the nation’s ongoing shortage of health-care workers, and the leaders of historically Black medical schools are calling for more funding to train a more diverse workforce. As of Monday, in areas where a health workforce shortage has been identified, the United States needs more than 17,000 additional primary care practitioners, 12,000 dental health practitioners and 8,200 mental health practitioners, according to data from the Health Resources & Services Administration.

In March, OIG published a new frequently asked questions (FAQ) page, General Questions Regarding Certain Fraud and Abuse Authorities. The FAQ page, located here, includes new guidance for ambulatory surgery center (ASC) investments by physicians who fail to qualify for the single-specialty ASC safe harbor under the Federal Anti-Kickback Statute.

In spring 2019, a curious piece of information landed at the FBI’s Baltimore field office. An informant said that for about $17,000, a recruiter in nearby Laurel, Md., had offered to provide a diploma and a fake transcript from a Florida nursing school, along with tutoring for the nurse licensing exam — without the need to actually take courses or receive clinical training.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is issuing this Health Alert Network Health Advisory about an outbreak of suspected fungal meningitis among U.S. patients hospitalized in Texas after undergoing cosmetic procedures under epidural anesthesia in the city of Matamoros, state of Tamaulipas, Mexico. It is currently unknown which organism(s) is causing the outbreak.

Envision Healthcare Corp. today announced it and certain of its wholly owned subsidiaries have filed voluntary petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Envision has entered into a Restructuring Support Agreement (RSA) with its key stakeholders supported by more than 60 percent of the company’s approximately $7.7 billion in debt obligations and expects that support will continue to grow in the coming days.
