The FDA is providing an update on O&M Halyard surgical N95 respirators and use of existing inventory. On August 9, 2023, O&M Halyard sent a recall notice instructing customers not to use lot #AM2164811 of FLUIDSHIELD Surgical N95 Respirator Mask, Orange (Small), Level 3, (Model 46827), because this respirator may not provide adequate filtration protection to the user.

House members from three key committees introduced a bipartisan health care bill Friday aimed at addressing price transparency, prescription drug costs, and workforce investment, consolidating measures that already have been advanced by the respective panels. Leadership from the House Energy and Commerce, Ways and Means, and Education and the Workforce committees introduced the Lower Costs, More Transparency Act, tying together numerous pieces of legislation focused on improving health care affordability.

World Patient Safety Day, established by the World Health Organization and recognized annually on September 17, offers an opportunity for healthcare providers to reflect on not only how we can improve the individual care we provide to patients, but how we can improve systems to achieve a world in which all people always experience the safest, highest quality, best-value healthcare across all settings. This year's World Patient Safety Day theme is "Engaging patients for patient safety."

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services unveiled a transformative step to test a state’s ability to improve the overall health care management of its state population. The States Advancing All-Payer Health Equity Approaches and Development Model ("States Advancing AHEAD" or "AHEAD Model") aims to better address chronic disease, behavioral health, and other medical conditions.

According to data exclusive to the AMA through its Organizational Biopsy, the overall reported burnout rate among U.S. physicians last year was 53 percent. While practice inefficiencies and organizational culture are the principal drivers of physician burnout, it can be difficult for health care organizations to know where they stand and what steps they can take to reduce physician burnout and improve well-being.

In this cohort study of 1 million patients, those treated by a female surgeon were less likely to experience death, hospital readmission, or major medical complication at 90 days or 1 year after surgery. This association was seen across nearly all subgroups defined by patient, surgeon, hospital, and procedure characteristics.

Among veterans aged 76 to 85 years in 2018-2019, [colorectal cancer (CRC)] screening was uncommon and varied only slightly by predicted life expectancy. These results suggest that clinicians may not be selectively targeting CRC screening to a small subset of healthy older adults with long life expectancies who may benefit from continued screening.
