On September 12, Representative Robin Kelly (D-IL) joined the Outpatient Surgery Quality and Access Act of 2023 as a cosponsor. The congresswoman sits on the US House Energy & Commerce (E&C) Committee, a committee with jurisdiction over ASC issues, and even more importantly, she serves on the E&C Health Subcommittee.

The Federal Trade Commission sued U.S. Anesthesia Partners Inc., one of the country's top anesthesia staffing companies, and its private-equity backer, Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe, on Thursday, accusing both entities of scheming over a decade to acquire anesthesia practices in Texas, monopolize the market, drive up prices for patients and generate profits. "Thanks to its anticompetitive conduct, USAP has been able to extract monopoly profits while simultaneously growing its monopoly power," the FTC said in its civil complaint, filed in federal court in the Southern District of Texas in Houston.

The American College of Surgeons (ACS), with the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS), has released new standards for outpatient vascular centers to help them provide optimal care and treatment of patients receiving vascular surgical and procedural care. These new standards, outlined in the Optimal Resources for Vascular Surgery and Interventional Care – Outpatient Standards manual, are part of the Vascular Verification Program, launched earlier this year by the ACS and SVS.

In a new study led by researchers at the American Cancer Society, most adults (73.2 percent) in the United States overdue for colorectal cancer screening reported that they did not receive a screening recommendation from their clinician despite having attended a wellness visit in the past year. The report also showed the prevalence of receiving a recommendation was lowest among marginalized racial/ethnic and socioeconomic groups.

While millions of people have undergone LASIK eye surgery since it became commercially available in 1989, patients sometimes develop cataracts later in life and require new corrective lenses to be implanted in their eyes. With an increasing number of intraocular lens options becoming available, scientists have developed computational simulations to help patients and surgeons see the best options.
