The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released its 2024 final payment rule for ASCs and hospital outpatient departments (HOPD) last week. CMS added multiple procedures to the ASC Covered Procedures List (ASC-CPL) that were not included in the proposed rule, including total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). The OAS CAHPS Survey is designed to measure patient experience with overall care received in ASCs. It is voluntary through the end of 2024 and will become mandatory for all eligible Medicare-certified ASCs beginning in 2025.

To ensure your facility is ready when the survey becomes mandatory, ASCA strongly encourages all ASCs to get started with the survey as soon as possible. ASCA members receive a discount on Press Ganey’s OAS CAHPS Survey.

ASCA’s National Advocacy Day will return February 26–28, 2024.

National Advocacy Day gathers engaged members of the ASC community from across the country to advocate for their facilities and the high-quality care they deliver. On October 30, the US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a new proposed rule, 21st Century Cures Act: Establishment of Disincentives for Health Care Providers That Have Committed Information Blocking. This rule is the latest extension of regulations stemming from the 21st Century Cures Act, passed in December 2016.

Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced it is finalizing policies to support primary care, advance health equity, assist family caregivers and expand access to behavioral and certain oral health care. These policies are included in the calendar year 2024 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule final rule, which also provides payment for principal illness navigation services to help patients and their families navigate cancer treatment and treatment for other serious illnesses, supporting the Biden-Harris Administration’s Cancer Moonshot mission to accelerate the fight against cancer.

A lethal cancer which can go unnoticed for years is striking down younger people at an increased rate. While cancers have steadily fallen over recent decades, scientists have been mystified by an explosion of colorectal cancer cases, also known as colon or rectal cancer, in younger adults who have traditionally been at low risk of the disease.

In a national address today, American Medical Association President Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH, spotlighted the growing national physician shortage and corresponding health system in crisis. In remarks delivered at the National Press Club, Dr. Ehrenfeld outlined critical strains on physicians, including enormous administrative burdens, burnout, attacks on science, increased consolidation across health care, a broken Medicare payment system, and health crises that worsen each day.

Often, workplace conversations about burnout put the onus on the individual to take care of their mental health while ignoring management’s role in solving the problem. A new anti-burnout campaign from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health avoids this typical — and often frustrating — tactic, instead imploring leaders to better support health care workers.

As numerous prescription drugs remain in short supply in the U.S., House Republicans have launched a probe into the issue and are demanding answers from the FDA. GOP members of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee on Friday sent a letter to Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Robert Califf asking for documents and a staff-level briefing on his agency’s role in mitigating drug shortages.
