The state’s largest health insurer, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, has begun restricting the use of anesthesia during colonoscopies, triggering a backlash from doctors who argue the change will discourage people from going through an already unpleasant but important procedure. Colonoscopies are a way to detect and remove growths in the colon, known as polyps, that are or could become cancerous.

Bipartisan support to cancel the entirety of the 3.37 percent Medicare physician pay cut that took effect Jan. 1 is growing, with nearly 200 members of Congress co-signing a letter urging House and Senate leaders to expeditiously pass legislation to address 2024 Medicare payment cuts. "We in Congress must continue our partnership with the physician and provider community to ensure that Medicare patients continue to have access to quality care," says the letter, led by Reps. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, MD (R-Iowa), Ami Bera, MD (D-Calif.), Larry Bucshon, MD (R-Ind.) and Kim Schrier, MD (D-Wash.).

Under the federal Stark Law, hospitals, physician groups, labs and other provider entities may provide non-monetary (i.e., non-cash or cash equivalent) compensation to physicians up to an aggregate amount of $507 for calendar year 2024. The dollar limit for "medical staff incidental benefits" provided by a hospital to a member of its medical staff (e.g., meals, parking and other items or incidental services that are used on a hospital’s campus) is less than $44 per occurrence.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is providing recommendations for health care providers considering using the Total Hip System, including resurfacing implants, manufactured by Synovo Production, Inc. and for patients who may have received certain implants used in the Synovo Total Hip System after 2019. Three components of the system, the Femoral Resurfacing Cup, the Acetabular Fixation Cup, and the Acetabular Bearing, have been significantly modified from the devices that were cleared by the FDA.

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is announcing that it considers vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) to be an established method of sterilization for medical devices, recognizing VHP’s long history of safety and effectiveness. The FDA has revised the final guidance, Submission and Review of Sterility Information in Premarket Notification (510(k)) Submissions for Devices Labeled as Sterile, to list VHP as an example of an Established Category A method of sterilization.
