6 Ways ASCs Lose Money Due to Disconnected Software

Rising expenses and a challenging reimbursement environment create significant financial pressure on surgery centers. It is crucial for ASCs to proactively address these avoidable issues that diminish their earnings.
On January 15, a bipartisan group of Washington State representatives introduced HB 2378, an act to restrict facility fees charged by certain “affiliated health care providers.” The legislation would prohibit an “affiliated health care provider” from charging, billing or collecting a facility fee except for services provided to a patient when the patient is on a hospital’s campus. “Affiliated health care provider” is defined broadly enough that ASCs would be prohibited from charging facility fees under the proposal.

Under the leadership of Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has released a final rule making important reforms to prior authorization to cut patient care delays and electronically streamline the process for physicians. Together, the changes will save physician practices an estimated $15 billion over 10 years, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

This study examined the use of natural language processing (NLP) to identify alcohol-related risks before surgery by analyzing patients’ clinical notes from three years prior. Comparing the NLP model with a human-labeled dataset and ICD codes, the NLP-based approach identified three times more patients with risky alcohol use, and accurately identified 87% of the patients classified by humans as higher risk.

A new bill regarding the financial burden of certain medical procedures was introduced in the Nebraska Legislature during the first week of its 2024 session. Senator Carol Blood’s bill, LB 829, would guarantee that patients with insurance would not be subject to additional costs for a medical service that’s associated with a colonoscopy, such as a polyp removal.

A House health care panel passed four bills that collectively put mandates on hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, insurers and managed care plans. The House Select Committee on Health Innovation voted unanimously to pass HB 63, which requires Florida hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers to go surgical smoke-free beginning Jan. 1, 2025.
