UnitedHealth Group said on Friday its Change Healthcare unit will start to process the medical claims backlog of more than $14 billion as it resumes some software services disrupted by a cyberattack last month. The company has been scrambling to resume services at the technology unit that was hit by a cyberattack on Feb. 21, disrupting payments to U.S. doctors and healthcare facilities and forcing the U.S. government to launch a probe.

Health plans and providers alike are disgruntled with a new report (PDF) to Congress released by the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) Friday. The American Medical Association and the Medical Group Management Association said the recommendations it gives for physician payments are flawed, while America's Health Insurance Plans defended Medicare Advantage.

Today, leaders from the American Nurses Association, the Emergency Nurses Association, and the American College of Emergency Physicians, joined together on Capitol Hill to highlight the need for passage of legislation designed to mitigate the frequency and severity of workplace violence in health care. During a briefing for congressional staffers, the presidents of the three organizations used data and storytelling to build an understanding of the impact this ongoing crisis has on health care workers and patients – a situation that is particularly dire in emergency departments which serve as the health care safety net and are open 24/7.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is providing an update on our ongoing evaluation of quality and performance issues related to plastic syringes made in China, and announcing additional recommendations and actions the FDA is taking to address these issues. In November 2023, the FDA informed consumers, health care providers, and health care facilities that the FDA is evaluating the potential for device failures (such as leaks, breakage, and other problems) with plastic syringes manufactured in China, that are used for injecting fluids into, or withdrawing fluids from, the body.
