There are more active drug shortages in the United States than ever, according to data from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the University of Utah Drug Information Service. The organizations first started tracking drug shortages in 2001. Active shortages previously peaked in 2014, with 320 drugs in active shortage.

The FDA is announcing expanded actions for Jiangsu Shenli Medical Production Co. Ltd. with an additional import alert for not meeting device quality system requirements, to prevent ALL plastic syringes by this manufacturer from entering the United States. We are also providing an update to our recommendations: Until further notice and because of potential quality and performance issues, the agency recommends that U.S. suppliers of plastic syringes, consumers, health care providers and facilities immediately transition away from using all models of plastic syringes (including 5 mL luer lock syringes) manufactured by Jiangsu Shenli Medical Production Co Ltd, unless use of these syringes is absolutely necessary until you can complete the transition.

The American Medical Association today released informal survey findings showing the ongoing, devastating impact of the Change Healthcare cyberattack, which threatens the viability of physician practices across the country, and, according to respondents, has serious implications for patient care. According to the survey, which was conducted from March 26 to April 3, restricted functionality since the cyberattack has resulted in: 36% of respondents reporting suspension in claim payment; 32% being unable to submit claims; and 22% being unable to verify eligibility for benefits.

A statement on "The Aging Surgeon" was initially developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Board of Governors Physician Competency and Health Workgroup and was approved by the Board of Regents at its October 2015 meeting. The following update of this statement based upon the work of the Board of Governors Physician Competency and Health Workgroup in 2023 addressing specific issues focused on the supporting lifelong competency of surgeons was approved by the ACS Board of Regents in February 2024 during its meeting in Chicago, IL.

The decadelong decline of independent physicians rolled on in 2022 and 2023 with a new high of 77.6% doctors employed by hospitals or other corporate entities as of the new year, according to a new report. The past two years saw that share increase by 5.1%, according to the Physicians Advocacy Institute-commissioned report prepared by Avalere.
