Shifts in colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, including guidance from the United States Preventive Services Task Force lowering the recommended screening age from 50 to 45 years in 2021, may leave gaps in clinicians’ understanding of related barriers and beliefs held by patients. This study uses the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Framework to analyze factors influencing CRC screening uptake among individuals aged 44–54 years and identifies how gaps in knowledge intersect with screening barriers, particularly as they relate to the health care system and sociocultural environment.

A yearlong bipartisan congressional investigation into two private equity-backed U.S. hospital systems found that patient care deteriorated at both operations as their private equity owners reaped significant payouts on their investments in the systems. The findings reinforced academic research showing how private equity health care investments harm patients while enriching investors.

On January 8, 2025, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey signed into law House Bill No. 5159, “An Act enhancing the health care market review process,” which was passed by the Massachusetts legislature in the last few days of 2024. The bill will implement greater scrutiny of certain health care entities and affiliated companies—including private equity sponsors, significant equity investors, health care real estate investment trusts, and management services organizations—as well as pharmaceutical companies and pharmacy benefit management companies in the Commonwealth.

Thirteen states now allow optometrists to perform scalpel eyelid surgery, even though these nonphysicians receive only a fraction of the training that ophthalmologists do. This legal trend is one that deeply concerns Iowa ophthalmologist Erin M. Shriver, MD, whose state in 2020 began allowing those with no required surgical training to perform more than 120 eyelid surgeries.
